NEC Commissioner Don Alexander visits Ukraine Biosphere Reserve

During a June visit of Ukraine, NEC Commissioner Don Alexander visited the HQ of the Carpathian Mountains Biosphere Reserve where he met with Director Dr. Fedir Hamor.

Dr. Hamor, noticing the difference in height between the two photographed subjects remarked it is easily explained by the difference in height between mountains and an escarpment!

Dr. Fedir Hamor, Director of the Biosphere Reserve since 1987, has authored more than 300 papers, including work on the subjects of primeval beech forests and special status of mountainous settlements.

Dr. Hamor told his visitor the Transcarpathian Hiking Trail, which begins at the Biosphere Reserve HQ in Rakhiv, Ukraine, is being extended a distance of 380 km into Poland.

Geologist Frank Brunton gave a fascinating presentation on the 450-million year old geological history of Ontario's Niagara Escarpment at the "Sources of Knowledge" forum May 14-15 in Tobermory, Ontario.

With fossil examples showing the ancient life forms of trilobytes and other life forms preserved with amazing clarity, Frank illustrated the incredible forces of geological change that shaped the Niagara Escarpment.

Hamilton's spectacular Tiffany Falls are no less awe-inspiring during the winter months than any other time of year!

Photographed for the forthcoming "Flavours of the Biosphere" webisodes on the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve, the falls seem to be frozen in time in an awesome cascade of ice tentacles.

Halton Region honoured with Niagara Escarpment Achievement Award

Congratulations to the Regional Municipality of Halton for receiving the Niagara Escarpment Commission's "Niagara Escarpment Achievement Award" for its outstanding forest management plan.

Six tracts of forests (423 ha) owned by the Region are included in the Niagara Escarpment Plan Area.

The Halton Regional Forest Management Plan sets high standards in both protecting and managing an extensive woodland corridor. The associated value to the Niagara Escarpment program is significant in that it marries the principles of the Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act and Niagara Escarpment Plan to the reality of managing forests in a sustainable and ecological manner.

The Niagara Escarpment Commission presented the Optimist Club of Greensville with a "Niagara Escarpment Achievement Award" for its restoration of the beautiful cobblestone bridge at Webster's Falls. NEC Director Mark Frawley, Hamilton Councillor Robert Pasuta, and Optimist Club members George Flosman, Brian Green and Woody Thompson joined Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger and Councillor Lloyd Ferguson for the presentation on Sept. 30th. What a wonderful contribution to the Niagara Escarpment and Hamilton community!

The Niagara Escarpment is one of Canada's most scenic landscapes - a rich mosaic of dolostone cliffs, forests, rivers, wildlife habitats, agricultural areas, cities and hamlets winding 725 km through the Province of Ontario.

A UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the Niagara Escarpment formed over 450 million years ago as the outer rim of a shallow sea known as the Michigan Basin.

The Niagara Escarpment is home to 300 bird species, 53 mammals, 36 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish and 100 varieties of flora including 37 types of orchids.

Offering some of the province's best hiking, skiing, rock climbing, fishing, boating, camping and swimming, the Niagara Escarpment is also home to the Bruce Trail, Canada's longest footpath.
